at the end, lao wang concludes:

To move from smaller cities into bigger cities is a dream that many people have realized. To move from bigger cities out to smaller cities is also a dream that no one takes it seriously.

for the last assertion "no one takes it seriously", en not really. as i know, some shanghainese bought houses or villas in cities near shanghai, and spent half of their time living in smaller cities. suzhou is a favorite for many shanghaiese people but there are several others emerging in the candidate list, like kunshan, jiaxing. those cities are usually called "secondary cities", which are less exciting than shanghai or beijing but still provide good living facilities and convenient traffic linking big cities. as a matter of fact, some "secondary " cities are no longer "secondary", suzhou now has ranked 4th after shanghai, beijing and guangzhou in terms of city GDP, and kunshan, another city favorited by shanghaiese, attracted 1/10 of taiwanese investment in mainland china.
