having lived in both cities, i have to be honestly tell you that i prefer beijing more than shanghai.
the reason is simple - shanghai is a "one-dimensional" city, while beijing is a "multi-dimension" city, in which people have different aspirations and therefore are more interesting.
this is a general comment that has no intention to offend shagnhai people. i myself is a native shanghainese and have deep love for the city and its people.
