via: china daily - 7,000 coal mines to close in crackdown, China Suspends Search for Trapped Miners

monday is a sad day for many of us, especially those who lost their relatives in the guangdong coal mine disaster:

China suspended a search Monday for 123 workers trapped after a flood swept through a coal mine in the country's south, declaring all of them dead.

and for many people who followed the issue with great concern, they have a tough question to ask, " what took those innocent lives away?"

the china daily article, as well as some other media reports, give us some hint:

Already the central government has attempted to eliminate questions of impropriety by requiring local government officials and leaders of the State-owned enterprises to withdraw their shares in collieries before September 22.

Collusion between government officials and colliery owners worsens the work safety situation and makes it more difficult for work safety departments to address the problem.

without scrutinies from the second party, be it the media, the public or another organization, you won't believe it's possible for the local officials to do that  by themselves because of the big money involved.

economic problems like this always indicate how important to build up the mechanisms of check and balance at all levels of the society. the driving forces of democratization of china come from a lot of economic problems like this, not from the ideological pressures inside or outside.

peace to those 123 workers of daxing coal mine.
