shanghai, like the rest of china, is undergoing massive constructions that reshape the city's skyline. this is great but sometimes really confusing to a person who has lived here for more than 20 years.
i guided a guest to a food street near nanjing road, when we got there, i found the food street disappeared and was replaced by a constrution site. i apologized to my guest and explained to him, "it was there when i came here not long ago, but no problem, there is a starbucks coffee near here, let's go". and when we got there, i found the starbucks was replaced by a department store, "how can it disappear overnight?! ... anyway, let me show you an authentic shanghai restaurant which was established in Qing dynastry, OK?", and when we got to the "authentic shanghai restaurant", somebody told me that the restaurant relocated to another place.

same thing happened when i waited for the shuttle bus to airport, visited my favorite bookstores, went to play squash, etc. they either changed route or closed or re-opened in another place, all happened in a very short period.
to exaggerate a little bit, the only place in shanghai that i am sure will stay there in the following 3 months is my home.
