This blog posting--"Who is Villifying Google?-- on Chinabyte is interesting. The author makes it pretty clear that he believes this latest spate of negative Google news is part of a longer, concerted campaign by Google's competitors to make Google look bad. As I wrote yesterday, news reports in many publications, even some very well-known ones, are fairly easy and cheap to buy in China.

internet is quickly becoming the leading medium in shaping public opinions in china, especially among young people. due to the nature of internet, some companys find it a powerful tool to launch PR wars against competitors on the internet, and there is almost zero risk to do that.

foreign firms are usually the victims of such negative media coverage because their competitors know how to take advantage of the nationalistic sentiment among chinese young.

such polts are hard to detect or regulate, not even mention to be punished. the only way to protect yourself, in my view, is to monitor the internet closely and use the internet to strike back as soon as unfounded and malicious reports are found.

whenever you pass by a pizza hut in shanghai, you always find people lining up in front of its entrance.

i am not surprised because that's a common practice for western restaurants.

as a matter of fact, you won't find any other restaurant in shanghai to do that. customers could either book by phone or sit inside to wait.

then one day we learned from an attendant of pizza hut that the line is purposefully arranged by the restraurant to attract people's attention and make favorite publicity for the restaurant.
