the 84-year-old man paid a visit to japan's war shrine and urged japan to take a tough stance towards china and south korea concerning their dispute over the war shrine.

as the former taiwan president, he once said that the disputed territory of Diaoyu island (between japan and mainland china/taiwan) belongs to japan.

his elder brother died as a japanese soldier when taiwan was japan's colony in 1945, and lee teng-hui visited the war shrine to mourn his late brother.
